JAMES L. FLANAGAN MBA, CEP, RFC
For nearly 30 years, James L. Flanagan has provided financial guidance to people at or near retirement. Over that time, he has become a nationally recognized expert on financial issues that affect seniors.
After 15 years in the financial services field, in 2001 Jim applied his knowledge of risk management, financial planning and business succession planning in forming Bentron Financial Group, LLC. Bentron specializes in comprehensive, fee-based estate and retirement planning services.
A Certified Estate Planner and Registered Financial Consultant, Jim’s experience, knowledge and integrity have attracted numerous longtime clients whom he empowers with regular seminars, market updates and other customized insights.
Also an accomplished financial journalist and author, Jim’s work includes “Just Ask Jim,” a financial advice column in Chicagoland Senior News. In addition to publishing other articles on financial, estate and business planning matters, he is the author of Packing For Retirement- A Comprehensive Guide For People 50-70 Planning for Retirement.
In 2007, Jim earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Dominican University’s Brennan School of Business with a concentration in Finance. He serves as adjunct professor at Triton College in River Grove, Ill., where he authored and teaches the retirement planning curriculum.
The father of three, Jim is a strong proponent of community service, particularly on behalf of senior citizens.
In 2005 he joined the Oak Park/River Forest Township Senior Services Committee, for which he has served as chairman since 2008. In 2010, Jim founded the Celebrating Seniors Coalition, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to celebrating, education and protecting older adults in Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest.
In addition, Jim is a member of Illinois FAST (Financial Abuse Strike Team), a multidisciplinary team of financial, legal, law enforcement and adult service providers that intervenes to safeguard older adults from financial abuse and exploitation.
Jim helped organize and serves as Unit Leader for the Tripcom Medical Reserve Corps, a volunteer organization in and around his hometown of River Forest that was formed to meet the health needs of the public in the event of a significant emergency, disaster or epidemic.
In 2015, Jim was awarded a scholarship from the Kott Gerontological Institute. He is currently enrolled in the Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. In December 2016, he expects to graduate with a Master of Arts in Gerontology.
